5 reasons your hair won't grow

So you've done everything possible to take care of your hair. or so you think. You are on your way to getting that waist length hair (#hairgoals) when all of a sudden your hair growth reaches a plateau.  If you are stuck at shoulder length hair and think your hair is bound to shoulder length for eternity, here's 5 reasons your hair won't grow and tips to push past the plateau and achieve optimal hair growth.

1. YOUR HAIR IS DRY

Moisturizing requires one main ingredient: water! In order to moisturize, you must use water based products.  Water based products coupled with water retaining butters and oil sealants, like our Super Buttercreme is key to achieving optimal moisture, which ultimately helps prevent breakage and split ends.

2. YOU NEED A TRIM

I know. Trimming your ends when you are trying to grow your hair seems counterproductive. But, trimming your ends as needed WILL retain hair growth over time.  When you trim damaged or split ends, you prevent further splitting, damage and overall breakage over time.  You'll find that styles are easier to manipulate, causing less stress on your tresses, which ultimately leads to more length retention.  We suggest trimming about 1/2 inch to 1 inch every 6-8 weeks.

3. YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR DIET + EXERCISE

You are what you eat.  When you power your body with superfoods and wholesome foods, you are feeding your body the nutrients it needs to remain healthy and ultimately leads to hair growth.  Superfoods like Avocado, Salmon, Yams and Blueberries are filled with vitamins, antioxidants fatty acids, proteins and healthy fats that have an immediate effect on the health of body and hair.

4. YOU USE TO MUCH HEAT

Your hair can withstand up to 450 degrees before technically burning or being damaged by heat (this may vary depending on hair type). Excessive heat can break the S-S or disulfide bonds in the hair causing permanent damage.  Thus, minimizing the amount of heat you use on your hair is key to maintaining optimal hair growth. Using your heat appliances on low settings or tossing the heat tools and using alternative straightening methods such as stretching, will certainly help minimize damage and promote hair growth.

5. YOU DON'T USE NATURAL PRODUCTS

In general, natural ingredients are better for your hair.  Feeding your hair plant and superfood derived ingredients promotes optimal health for your hair in the same way that it keeps your body healthy.  Stick to products, such as our Supernaturals Collection for curls, kinks, and waves, that are committed to promoting style and hair growth using the most sustainable formulas possible.  Your hair will thank you later.

Bonus tip:  Sometimes hair growth is simply based on genetics and terminal length (the maximum length that your hair will grow. Audrey Sivasothy, author of The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care offers amazing insight into genetics and hair growth.
